Press X to Jason

I don't know if I'd be able to tolerate an entire game of this kind of pseudo interaction but this clip illustrates just how affecting certain video game scenarios can be. One of the main characters from 2010 release "Heavy Rain" on PS3 loses his young son Jason in a thronged mall at the beginning of the game. Jason wanders away from his father, the character you're in control of, and you have to struggle to get through the crowd to find him. Just watching the clip I felt the intensity of the situation and cause and effect of the main characters actions, I'd imagine if you were actually playing through this sequence you'd feel genuinely responsibility for finding Jason. If the entire game manages to generate relatable and equally terrifying scenarios and retain you're interest in the story I'd really like to play the rest of it.

This sequence quickly became an internet meme resulting in some dude creating a flash based game where you have to repeatedly press X to shout out "Jason" until the inevitable happens. Found here.

My Top Tracks Of 2010

I'm basing this on a few different things but mainly on how often I played them this year...and these tracks were played a shitload.

Bodycode - Spacial Harmonics

I love Bodycode, everything he releases whether it's under the Portable name or whatever I suck it up. While the entire Immune album was on loop for months this year this is the song that I think is it's best show case. Starts off like a loopy forest theme from Legend Of Zelda going all over the place before it's jungle click clacks settle into a deep and funky groove. Fun.

Isolée - The Fantastic Researches of Yushin Maru

This 9 and a half minute opus is deceptively complex. Isolée is definitely a total sound nerd. The range of warm noises in this exhilarating tune is wonderful evoking so many moods throughout the song. Maybe I've just listened to it a bit much.

Cobblestone Jazz - Fiesta

This years Chance Dub from Cobblestone Jazz was a departure from their usual psychedelic sound found in such hits as India In Me (which you may remember from Ellen Allien's brilliant Fabric 34) resulting in a more straightforward sprightly album. Fiesta sums up the trippy yet party atmosphere of the album.

Axel Boman - Purple Drank

Keta vocals were all the rage this year. Duurty sexy tune.

Mark E - Nobody Else

Epic disco house track. I love nobody else.

Storm Queen - Look Right Through

Storm Queen aka Morgan Geist aka one half of Metro Area returned with this track in 2010...not that he was ever really away. I reckon this was all done analogue. The synth sounds and bass are so fat and warm. It's kinda cheesy but i love it. Damon Scotts vocal, especially in the chorus, is so catchy and whimsical.

Tiger and Woods - Caddy Shag

Funk disco electronic euphoria heaven...just wait for it. It's totally worth it. More then likely the same people behind Cleo and Patra. Remember them?

Tracey Thorn - Get Around To It

Tracey Thorn's cover of Arthur Russell's Get Around To It. Her's is an altogether funkier version but I like it a lot.

Isolee - The Fantastic Researches Of Yushin Maru

I've posted this elsewhere on a different blog but it should be here for prosperity regardless. 9 and a half minutes of sonic joy. Gooey warbly Isolee at his best. Bring on the new album!

Soul Clap - Extravaganza

I shouldn't like this song as at its core its basically a re-working of a Jamie Foxx song...I know, I know, how the fuck could this be any good? But really it is. Seriously.

Art Department - Without you

I remember Dixon playing this at some point last Sunday. He was awesome by the way. Up there with one of the best sets I've seen since I got here.
